The Power of Walking Together: 5 Surprising Benefits for Mental Health & ParentingDec 05, 2023
As parents, we're constantly seeking ways to improve our mental fitness and strengthen our relationships with our children. But what if I told you that one of the simplest and most effective ways to achieve this is by doing something we all do every day: walking.
Walking together with our children may seem like a trivial activity, but it holds remarkable power. Today, I want to share with you 5 actionable insights on how walking together can take your mental fitness parenting to the next level.
I started a simple 5 min walking routine with my daughters and it has transformed our mornings. A bonus hack is if you have multiple children try and take separate walks with them. I am sure you have noticed, but some children are early risers and some are late. Use this to your advantage. Walk with your early bird in the morning and in the evening with your late owl. This way you get a special time with each child to fill their bucket and connect with you. I know this can be hard with scheduling, but if possible it can be very powerful.
Now onto the key benefits of walking.
First, walking together allows us to be present in the moment with our children. Leave your phone behind and focus on the sounds, sights, and conversations around you. This mindfulness can reduce stress and increase connection.
Second, walking boosts energy levels and improves mood. Just 10 minutes can make a difference! Use this time to chat with your child, listen to their thoughts, and share your own.
Third, walking outdoors stimulates creativity. Observe nature together and encourage your child's curiosity. This can lead to new ideas, problem-solving skills, and a deeper appreciation for the world around us.
Fourth, walking strengthens our relationship with our children. Use this time to actively listen, validate feelings, and have meaningful conversations. This active engagement fosters trust and understanding.
Lastly, walking creates lasting memories. Take photos, collect leaves or stones, and create a memory book with your child. These shared experiences shape our family narrative and become treasured moments.
Walking together is a simple yet powerful tool for mental fitness and parenting. By incorporating daily walks into our routine, we can prioritize our well-being, strengthen our relationships, and create lasting memories. So, lace up your shoes and take the first step towards a healthier, happier you – alongside your child.
